Glasgow lads Three Blind Wolves are something special. Unlike their fellow Scots, they’ve disregarded the heavily accented vocals and deliberate melodic nods to their Scottish heritage in favour of a sound that’s a little more transatlantic. Single “In Here Somewhere” is their latest offering, showcasing the band’s gut wrenching, powerful Americana sound.
There are clear nods to Neil Young and The Decemberists here but their music digs much deeper. “In Here Somewhere” begins with a creeping sense of heartache and regret as the music traipses behind beautifully. The band’s signature build-ups and breakdowns are executed perfectly, bringing everything to a wonderful climactic, cacophonous end. Sheer brilliance.
B-side “Kid’s Allright” is a complete change of pace and it’s good to see another side of Three Blind Wolves. The vocals and music almost dance around each other in the same way Kings of Leon’s did around their “Young & Young Manhood” era. It’s exciting, fast-paced, and highly enjoyable.
As they embark upon a tour with Frightened Rabbit and hopefully a larger release in the works for later in 2013, Three Blind Wolves may well become the most important new band to emerge from Scotland this year.
