Saturday Night Gym Club could be filed under “electro,” but their music is more cerebral than that as they combine dance and synth laden soundscapes to create music that feels as vast, as it is introspective.
Their first EP, “How To Build A Life Raft” depicted a young woman floating, lost at sea on its cover, and the artwork for “The Nowhere Team” has her washed up on a strange planet, her body the land and the hills as two people stare out onto this alien landscape. Saturday Night Gym Club’s music is very much like this—they’re creating images with sound.
The second track on the EP, “Landscapes” feels very much like M83 lost in space. And we’re not talking about cheesy space sounds here, this is far more sophisticated.
“Terra Firma” is probably the highlight of the EP and the most accessible track as well. This is where the band’s M83 influences really shine as most of the EP veers more toward Grimes meets Boards of Canada. “These Infernal Machines” closes the EP on a spare, glitchy note and it seems like the band is setting us up for what’s to come.
Saturday Night Gym Club are an interesting prospect who sound as though they’re embracing a much more alternative electro/ dance infused sound that combines their influences perfectly into something that becomes wholly unique to them.
