Kapil Seshasayee recently re-released his EP “Crimes,” so we thought it was about time we strapped ourselves in and gave our speakers a bit of a workout. We were not disappointed.
It’s hard to get your head around the fact that Kapil is just one man creating such an intricate and intense noise—juxtaposed with his clear voice cutting through reams of distortion and punctuating lyrics imbued with meaning.
The EP kicks off with “Host” (which Kapil has also given away as a free download), a weighty noise rock throb of a track that sets expectations pretty high for the rest of the release. Thankfully it does not disappoint and the jazz infused title cut, “Crimes” keeps up the intensity before dialing things down for “Lumbering,” which sounds like the bastard child of a guitar and a modem having a nervous breakdown (in the best possible way).
Final track, “Whatever Was Arranged,” inspired by Coppola’s The Conversation (and also another generous giveaway), gently leads us out of this magnificent landscape of distortion and improvised percussion until we’re left, slackjawed, and not quite sure what just happened. So, we put the EP on again, and repeat.
If you’re looking for something with a bit of meat on its bones that doesn’t lead you by the nose with simplified riffs and radio friendly hooks, then you need to get hold of Kapil’s Seshasayee’s “Crimes.” Turn it up loud.
“Crimes” is out now An Automaton Records.
