The Single Girl: Humphrey Milles,
“Not Enough”

Reading about Humphrey Milles online, one gets the sense he does things on his on terms. Having already embraced the “industry” with open arms before, he eventually recoiled, spent time on his music on his own, travelled, and essentially lived his life away from the noise.

If you’re a musician though, music is inside you and it’s not something you can ignore, and from the sounds of Humphrey’s latest single “Not Enough,” he’s got a lot more to give.

From the opening lines you can tell this is more than a mere indie anthem as Milles sings: “Forget the things that you know and everything you own, burn your house to the ground, give your money away…” Crescendoing into the chorus, Humphrey sings about the emptiness of our modern lives, but instead of executing this with melancholy, the melody makes you feel as though you’re climbing a mountain – it’s a challenge, but you will win if you try.

You could compare Humphrey to Doves, Elbow, or Ed Harcourt, but where Humphrey elevates himself above the rest is the feeling he’s out there climbing that mountain on his own, in his own time, under his own rules.

If “Not Enough” is only the beginning, we can’t wait for the landslide. With an album penned for 2013, Humphrey Milles may well become one of the most important burgeoning talents on the indie scene.
