And just like that, the track starts. No drawn out intro, just BAM and Alphas’ latest single “Waves” is pouring out of your speakers and caressing your ears with a classic indie rock sound that’s pretty much timeless.
It’s strange how three guys from Aberdeen can sound so Northern. We don’t know if it’s the phrasing because there is definitely a slight Scottish twang to frontman Andrew Burden’s voice, but his delivery is drenched in swagger and attitude that’s pure Madchester, but also with a certain gentleness.
The sound is also so much bigger than your typical three-piece with loads of energy, multiple guitar parts, keyboards, and a thumping drum line that makes you feel like you’re running full pace the street on a night out, the wind in your hair. Comparisons to The Futureheads are inevitable, but there’s a wave of euphoria (pun intended) running throughout the single that’s more reminiscent of noughties pop punk.
“Waves” is a very promising start to what we’re hoping will be a cracking debut album, New Fire, released in September.
“Waves” is out now on AlphaBravoCharlie Records.
