Some people can’t seem to figure out whether these guys are so unhip it’s a new kind of cool, or if their look and dress code are simply a genuine presentation of the band’s personalities. I mean, are beards and Levi’s really that emotive an issue? Soon, it will mean nothing, as the band are about to make that leap from press darlings with a huge cult audience, to the big leagues. Don’t be surprised to see them headlining at the 02 later this year; actually, can I make plea to the band now: how about an old fashioned 30 date UK tour, culminating in 10 nights at the Royal Festival Hall? We can all dream…
The album Helplessness Blues is released in four weeks’ time, and it won’t disappoint the ever growing legion of fans that the band continue to build. The Seattle group seem to have tapped into several different fanbases, in a completely organic fashion, without hype or radio support, just by having some great material, and appearing fresh, whilst appealing to fans of older artists like Crosby, Stills & Nash, America, Neil Young and classic-era Beach Boys. It doesn’t hurt that they have a natural warmth of personality, an air of sincerity that cannot be faked, and a powerful live reputation. But then, you already knew all that, didn’t you? Check out this clip and count down the days until May 2nd, when the marvellous Bella Union label release one of the albums of 2011.
