Pantera, The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000 (5 LP Colored Vinyl w/7″ Vinyl Single) | With their 1990 album Cowboys From Hell, Pantera debuted their signature sound and invigorated the metal scene while enlisting legions of devoted fans around the world. For the next decade, the band continued to ascend to the top of the music world, earning four platinum albums and, with 1994’s Far Beyond Driven, a #1 debut on the Billboard album chart.
To celebrate Pantera’s raucous legacy, Rhino will release both a new 5-LP boxed set and single disc compilation. The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000, compiled of Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display Of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing The Steel (2000).
Deafheaven, New Bermuda (Limited Edition, Deluxe 2LP Set, Includes Download Card) | San Francisco’s Deafheaven found massive critical success when their 2013 album Sunbather was an unexpected crossover hit, earning the band a 92/100 Metacritic score and ending the year as the best reviewed album of 2013. No one could have anticipated a band that drew from equal parts Weakling and My Bloody Valentine ascending to such heights, and that incomprehensibility added to the band’s singularity and allure.
Two years later, founding members George Clarke and Kerry McCoy began working on their ANTI debut, New Bermuda, with a new perspective. Says Clarke: “Sunbather yearned for something better. New Bermuda focuses on the idea of false promise, achieving something and wondering if it’s what you really wanted in the first place.” McCoy shares that sentiment: “Sunbather sounds like people who have nothing but are satisfied with life. There’s an uplifting quality to it. But New Bermuda is a very tense record.”
McCoy cites death metal demigods Dissection and Morbid Angel, the blackened death pioneers Behemoth, and Cliff Burton-era Metallica as influences on the new album. As New Bermuda progresses, Deafheaven travels further outside of their comfort zone, feasting on other niches of underground metal and offsetting the blunt force of their feral rage with more complex and nuanced beauty. A sophisticated and subdued pop element kicks off “Baby Blue”, before the band abruptly shifts into an amalgam of NWOBHM’s anthemic urgency and thrash metal’s racing chugs.
There’s a brief comedown where the band veers into the musique concrete soundscapes and hushed melodrama of early Godspeed You! Black Emperor before “Come Back” resumes the band’s merciless assault of stampeding drums and vitriolic guitar harmonies, only to shift mid-song into the somber territories of 4AD’s early catalog. Which is not to say that Deafheaven have softened their approach; New Bermuda offers the most punishing music of the band’s career in the wake of their greatest success.
The Flaming Lips, Heady Nuggs 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997 (Explicit) (5LP) | Clouds Taste Metallic, the band’s seventh album, is considered one of The Lips’ best and earned them much critical fanfare. All-Music called it “a masterful collection that completes the Flaming Lips’ odyssey into the pop stratosphere” and compared it to the Beach Boys’ definitive album Pet Sounds. Released on September 19th, 1995, Clouds Taste Metallic is also the last Lips album to feature guitarist Ronald Jones.
Heady Nuggs 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997, will be released in several configurations, including a three-CD set (plus digital equivalents) and a numbered, limited edition five-LP box set. (Individual vinyl LPs will be released at a later date.) The Official Flaming Lips Store will carry an exclusive numbered and colored vinyl version of the five-LP box set along with three exclusive out-of-print t-shirts and three out-of-print posters, designed by Wayne that were originally sold during the Clouds era, that will be limited to a one time run.
The CD set will include three discs. The first features the entirety of Clouds Taste Metallic plus the rarities The King Bug Laughs (Oddities and Rarities) (a collection of previously unreleased, promo-only, and compilation-only tracks gathered together and available for the first time ever in one place). The second is a promo-only compilation CD entitled Due To High Expectations The Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles For Your Balloons, and the third is a previously unreleased live recording of the band’s club show at Moe’s captured in Seattle on May 10th, 1996.
