The TVD Record Store Club for 11/13/15

Welcome to the TVD Record Store Club for the week ending 11/13/15.

The TVD Record Store Club is another free feature we’ve added to The TVD Record Store Locator App that recently relaunched refreshed and rebranded. The Club points to a record store agenda that we’re assembling for your weekend now that new release vinyl lands in stores on Fridays—AND for the early part of the week coming when those mom and pops could use the foot traffic.

Every Thursday we’ll be tipping you off right here at TVD—and within the app at the Club tab—to releases of merit newly on store shelves, along with in-store ticket giveaways you can win by simply waving the app, pricing incentives, contests, cool partner initiatives, and a host of surprises we’re looking forward to putting in your pocket on the regular.

This week Son Volt’s Trace arrives in stores once more, along with fresh helpings of Neil Young, Panda Bear, Pentimento, and Atmosphere for your weekend record store outings. (And some cool incentives too.)

Son Volt, Trace | This fall, Jay Farrar will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Son Volt’s acclaimed debut album, Trace, with tour dates featuring original pedal steel player, Eric Heywood, along with multi-instrumentalist, Gary Hunt. The tour is billed as “Jay Farrar Performs Songs Of Trace.” For more information please go to www.sonvolt.net.

Trace: 20th Anniversary Edition includes audio that has been digitally remastered from the original analog masters. Farrar was heavily involved in the remastering process and contributes highlighted track commentary to the liner notes, which also feature a contribution from No Depression magazine founder Peter Blackstock.

In addition to every song from the 1995 original album, the first disc also features previously unreleased demos for eight album tracks, including “Drown,” “Live Free,” “Windfall,” and an acoustic version of the rocker “Route.”

The second disc contains an unreleased live performance recorded at The Bottom Line in New York’s Greenwich Village on February 12, 1996. At the show, the band played nearly every song from Trace , covered Del Reeves’ “Looking At The World Through A Windshield,” and performed “Cemetery Savior,” a tune that wouldn’t surface until the following year on Son Volt’s sophomore release, Straightaways.

The show also features songs originally recorded by Uncle Tupelo, the vastly influential alt-country band that Farrar started with Jeff Tweedy in the Eighties. Among the standouts are: “Slate,” “True to Life” and the title track from the band’s final album Anodyne (1993).

Neil Young, Bluenote Cafe | Recorded at various shows during Neil Young and Bluenote Café’s 1988 tour, this superb live set documents one of Neil’s most funky and heartfelt periods, featuring 7 unreleased songs – “Soul of a Woman,” “Bad News Comes to Town,” Ain’t it the Truth,” “I’m Goin’,” “Crime of the Heart,” “Doghouse,” “Fool for Your Love,” – and a searing 19+ minute version of the immortal “Tonight’s the Night” at The Pier in New York City. It was a wild night.

One of the most influential artists of all time, Neil Young has set a standard of artistic integrity and iconoclastic creativity. Before starting his multi-platinum solo career, he was a founding member of the folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield and worked with the groups Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills and Nash. The Canadian singer-songwriter was recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 for his work as a solo artist and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1982.

Young’s philanthropic work is as renowned as his musical legacy. His famous Bridge School Benefit Concert has become a yearly tradition since 1986 and continues to boast an incredible line-up of high-profile artists. Each year, Young donates all of the proceeds to the Bay Area’s Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. He was also one of the original founders of Farm Aid in 1985, and continues to be an active member on the organization’s board of directors.

Pentimento, I, No Longer | With so much steam building, the band are poised for big things with LP2, slated for release this fall via Bad Timing Records. Produced by Paul Leavitt (All Time Low, Senses Fail) the band’s new material is set to be the culmination of everything – both in music and life – the band have learned over the past few years.

Fans and critics alike hail Hansen’s lyrics for their fragility, introspection, and emotional resonance without appearing overwrought, and the drummer says he worked hard to step outside himself to explore universal lyrical themes certain to stick with listeners from all walks of life.

Panda Bear, “Crosswords” EP | On his “Crosswords” EP, Panda Bear, aided on studio production duties by Sonic Boom, bequeaths five fresh and finely observed body-pop wonders – three new songs: “No Mans Land,” “Jabberwocky,” and “Cosplay”—and two re-castings of previous ore – “The Preakness”—previously heard in spirited demo form on 2012’s Tomboy LP boxset—and the whole shebang treasure-topped with a fresh take on his Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper LP soul tour de force “Crosswords.”

Atmosphere, You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having (10 Year Anniversary Edition) | With a career built on eight albums, dozens of side projects, and over 18 years of touring, Atmosphere’s classic album, You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having, is back after being out of print on vinyl for several years.
