Youngblood Hawke:
The TVD First Date

Youngblood Hawke’s self-titled debut EP arrives…tomorrow, 8/14!

“I remember jumping up and down wildly on my mother’s bed imitating Mick Jagger in my pj’s while she blasted ‘Brown Sugar.'”

“My mother was a MASSIVE Rolling Stones fan. Obsessed is a suitable word. So much so that she would drag me to see this local band called Billy Haggen and the Lug Nuts because the lead singer resembled a slightly over-the-top version of Mick. He would cover their songs, bust out Jagger’s signature moves and have my mother in a frenzy. “Mom… thats not him.”

My parents were always blasting records in the house. They didn’t have a huge collection, but quality made up for quantity. I remember being exposed to early Beatles, Dylan, Van Morrison, The Doors, Bee Gees, etc. Music was always flowing through the hallways of my childhood home.

Unfortunately, my parents went their separate ways and their collection did, too. Sadly, all the records were damaged in a rain storm in the garage. I remember riffling through the damp and moldy records with a pit in my stomach.

Fast forward 26 years, and I find myself at a Silverlake flea market desperately wanting to start my own collection. Luckily, Los Angeles is full of people selling amazing records and is home to one of the largest record stores, Amoeba Records. You can pretty much find anything you’re looking for, as long as your willing to hunt them down.

Listening to your favorite songs on a record player is an experience. You feel closer to the music, closer to the band. You’re listening to music the way its supposed to be heard.

I have everything from Rod Stewart, Paul Simon, James Taylor to Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Al Green, and Stevie Wonder. I’m looking forward to adding to my collection. The search is part of the adventure. Nothings better than coming home, having a few cold ones and relaxing to your favorite tunes.”
