Yesterday morning I caught a glimpse of the cover of this week’s Time magazine and its feature story, “The Me Me Me Generation. Millennials are lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents. And why they will save us.”
Boy did that ring a bell!
That said, this week’s Idelic Hour is not about our children. This hour of “heavy freak beat” jams has the Moms in mind. After all it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday and now would be a good time to scramble for a Sunday brunch reservation or have your kids whip up for grandma an “arts & crafts” project that you can rush to Fed-ex with and blast out for 50 bucks.
Thinking about moms and millennials, I started day dreaming back to my days of being “just out of the house” and starting on my own—the “gimme some” generation. At the time, while in college at UCLA, I had a friend who still lived with his mother in her plush, suburban house in the flats of Beverley Hills.
I remembered thinking how strange this kid was for living at home. The first time I went over to get stoned, I had that feeling of being an “intruder,” walking up mom’s stairs to his room. I opened his door and there in front of me in giant painted letters on his wall was:
“DON’T TELL MOM ABOUT THIS”
It’s rad going from being a kid to being whatever that next step is—call it “entitled narcissist?”
I have love and hope for this generation and today I got love and admiration for you too, Mom.
Moms love us through thick and thin, so here’s an hour of way cool, and sometimes dark, songs for all of you.
