Greetings from New York City!
This week I was back in my home town of New York City. The city’s heat and humidity triggers old memories. As I was planning for my trip, I couldn’t stop thinking about the late 70’s Nick Gilder smash, “Hot Child in The City.” It was an easy muse to kick off this, now third, Idelic Hour set from NYC.
As news of the civil unrest in the UK came in, I couldn’t help reflecting upon the racial tension of the late sixties. I found myself sweating on the streets of Manhattan daydreaming about hot evenings in Harlem, mostly experienced through the window of my parents car, escaping the city for the beaches of Long Island.
The end result is an Idelic Hour that contains a solid half hour set of soul and hip hop celebrating summer street anthems of days past.
Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, the three artists I associate most with Harlem get me the “highest.” Bill Withers, Dylan, and Fania All Stars are of note. Only a few new songs hanging in this mix are essential.
So, let’s open up some fire hydrants and tune in the Idelic boom box for this dreamy “Hot Child in the City” mix . . .
