Greetings from Laurel Canyon!
By the time you read this I will far from the warmth of an LA September day and headed east to New York for a few days, and then onto Nashville. Next week’s show will be my first from Nashville.
The first stop on my trip is my sister’s house to visit my mom, sis, and my two teenage nieces Lucy and Ella. Tomorrow, my second stop is Sarah Lawrence College to visit my daughter Zoe. Holy shit this is gonna be a weekend of chicks coming of age!
This week’s Idelic Hour muse is taken from a line in the Neil Diamond song, ” Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon.”
Zoe, Lucy, and Ella ain’t quite there yet, but as we explore the journeys of the coming of age through song, it’s clear “you’ll be there soon.” Aside from Peter Pan, we all get to the point when our youth has vanished.
Whatever—teenagers don’t have time for the sentiments of old rockers like me. It’s OK, for us parents, having a kid grow up and leave “the nest” can be tough. Especially for you Moms. I’m sure some days you feel like you’ve been shot, thrown in a ditch, and left for dead.
This weekend I’ll be at college to do my part as the Dad. Once I too partied like it was the first week of school. Now I sit up late nights playing records and remembering those girls, the party, and the songs.
You’ll be there soon, girls.
Oh shit—it’s Friday the 13th in the year 2013! I love that!
