TVD Vinyl Giveaway: David Bowie, “Rebel Rebel” and “1984” limited edition 7″ picture discs

The month of April isn’t just bringing rain showers that lead to May flowers. April also brings about Record Store Day. And nothing celebrates Record Store Day like a vinyl giveaway!

Music icon David Bowie, aka David Robert Jones, made a lasting mark in the US rock music scene in the ’70s. Hailing from the UK, Bowie is an artist who formed an impression on the public with his unique voice and meaningful songs, and he has been in the spotlight for decades.

First released on February 15, 1974, David Bowie’s single “Rebel Rebel” celebrated its 40th anniversary just two months ago. In commemoration of its 40th year, Parlophone is releasing limited edition 7″ picture discs of Bowie’s big hits. The seventh disc of the limited edition series, “Rebel Rebel” was released on March 10, 2014, and we happen to have a copy of the limited edition 7″ picture disc to give away! And for Record Store Day, we also have the “1984” limited edition 7″ picture disc that is set to be released on RSD this year, April 19.

The “Rebel Rebel” limited edition picture disc’s sides contain the US version of “Rebel Rebel” and the original mix of the track. According to Bowie’s official site, the original mix of “Rebel Rebel” hasn’t been available on 7″ since the beginning of the ’80s. The pictures printed on the discs are photos of Bowie in the ’70s, taken while filming the corresponding music video while in the Netherlands.

The “1984” picture disc features the version from Bowie’s concept album Diamond Dogs, as well as a live in-studio version taken from ABC’s Dick Cavett Show in December 1974. Diamond Dogs was originally release on CD in 1985, so this will be the debut of “1984” on vinyl. The image on the A side is of Bowie and author William Burroughs. It was shot for a Rolling Stone interview with the two of them in London in November 1973. The AA side features an image from the “1984” performance on the Dick Cavett Show.

Like David Bowie, many artists create stage names for themselves. To win the two limited edition 7″ Bowie picture discs, leave a comment below naming an artist who uses a stage name. I’m going to say Lorde, aka Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor.

A winner with a North American mailing address will be chosen a week from today, on Thursday, April 10. The records will be shipped after Record Store Day, April 19.
