If you were born before or during the ’80s, you’re liable to dig on comic books, leather jackets, or movies that had their initial release on VHS. It’s not the individual items that are important, but the cultural context that surrounds them that we love so much. Lucky for nostalgia fiends craving an ’80s aesthetic, Kavinsky just released his retro-tastic album Outrun.
Kavinsky is a dance producer who feels just as much at home around nostalgic sounds as with his dance rhythms and hi-end production. His tracks are full of FM synthesizers, punchy snares, and chord progressions that will remind you of movies of girls with big poofy hair and gnarly fashion. We’ve got a vinyl copy of Outrun to give away and a signed poster (printed on “photo paper”—sounds fancy).
Following a string of singles and EPs, Outrun is Kavinsky’s first full-length. The album’s lead single “Nightcall” was co-produced by SebastiAn and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, lending it some heavy scene cred. After getting on the Drive soundtrack, the song got some heavy YouTube viewage, so it seems that Kavinsky’s warm retro sounds are here to stay.
