Were there to be the proverbial TVD theme song, The March Divide may have hit upon it with the single “Still Analog” from their forthcoming release, February 2013’s Music for Film, released via Dead Letter Records. We’re delighted to debut the video today with some background from the band’s Jared Putnam.
“Todd A. Zellar at Eden Z Films did the whole enchilada. The idea behind the title of the song, ‘Still Analog’ is to say that I’m behind the times in a lot of ways. So, while I guess it’s maybe not all that unexpected for the video to have an old tape deck or projector, the idea was to convey that I’m just a bit old fashioned.
The video starts with the girl I refer to as Shannon in the song, flipping through her records, and deciding to listen to mine. Maybe she’s missing me or just thinking about me. Throughout the rest of the video, we wanted to show those cool shots of vintage equipment to hit on the metaphors in the lyrics like the ‘old note books, with pin marks and misspelled hooks,’ to maybe point out that they’re not really metaphors at all.
All the various imagery is broken up by circling back to different ways of sending the message—typing a letter, recording a plea on cassette—that if Shannon would just come and see me, I could fix myself, and maybe whatever I was going through wouldn’t matter anymore. The way that Todd was able to reference these metaphors throughout the song, but still circle back to the real ideas in the lyrics, is amazing to me.”
