A new generation of New Zealand acts is making its way to New York City next week to participate in a special CMJ Showcase, and by way of a preview for that evening (and akin to our previous time down under) TVD will sound a lot like New Zealand this week.
We’ll meet the bands and chat a bit about our favorite topic around here—rekkids.
Day #4! Popstrangers!
My first experiences with vinyl have always stuck in my head. My Grandma was the person who always had vinyl at her house and she played it all the time between talkback radio.
I was only allowed to touch the records and put them on if I was ever so careful, probably for fear of me using them as Frisbees. I thought because these records were so delicate they had to be expensive. I could never figure out how music was coming out of these things and how to find the song you wanted to hear.
Popstrangers – Avenue
When Grandma gave me a big box set of Beatles records for one of my birthdays I didn’t even have anything to play them on so I ended up taking all the sleeves off and putting them up around the house.
Today Auckland has quite a few places to pick up old and new records. Real Groovy is a local music shop that has record store days where it sells vinyl quite cheap and all the new stuff can be ordered in which is good. I bought a Bauhaus record at thelast one, which was really cheap.
Popstrangers – Happy Accidents
It’s quite hard to get our music pressed onto vinyl when you live in New Zealand as you have to get it done overseas and it ends up being so expensive.
Last year a series of split 7” of local bands was released, selling at shows and online. I am a big fan of them. It’s just so much better having something physical like that than getting an mp3 download online. Hearing the mastering differences on the split 7” we did with Collapsing Cities was really cool.
