So sure, you’ve heard of the Bruise Cruise if you weren’t on it earlier this year, and you’ve read about the rock and roll vacation at one million media outlets—but did you know they embrace vinyl just as much as the land-locked writers over here at TVD?
The festival has its own record label, Bruise Cruise Records, which will bestow on every cruise-goer one 7” in their complimentary gift bags. The Cruise will be premiering the unreleased Fucked Up track, “I Hate Summer.”
The single with be part of a split 7” with The Dirtbombs with cover artwork by Rob Corradetti. The 7” is part of a limited edition vinyl collection featuring artists from the 2012’s lineup.
We cornered Jonah Falco of Fucked Up to get his thoughts on a few of our favorite things:
What’s the first record you ever bought?
I think it was officially either a Nat Adderly 12″ or a Blanks 77 5″. Either way a graceful entrance to vinyl.
What’s the best record you’ve bought this year?
Anti System “In Defense of the Realm” og. Hardly at the level of bonzer status or even “all time classic” but I really needed it. The intro to “Service/1000 Rifles” is a charged lil stunner.
What are your favorite record stores, past and present?
There was a place in Stockholm that just seemed to have every and any classic Swedish punk or hardcore record…not to mention some seriously powerful European ’70s punk hitters. But all being said I have to stick with my hometown and say that Hits and Misses, Full Blast (RIP), and Rotate This—all in Toronto—are my fav stores.
Fucked Up – I Hate Summer
What’s the best piece of knowledge you’ve received for a record store clerk?
Dismissive and sarcastic: “Enjoy the Led Zeppelin III of HC” at my teenage self buying Discharge’s “Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing.” One of the best.
Do you have that one record you’ve never been able to find—your “Holy Grail” of vinyl?
While I’ve seen The Next’s “Make it Quick” 45, the copies I’ve come across have never quite been right. It’s either too beat up, lacking a cover, has a fake cover, or it’s too expensive. I absolutely NEED this record. I feel like if I get it I won’t have to buy any more records. That statement of course is like the moment you’re being sick from drink and say “If I make it through this, I swear I’ll never touch alcohol again…” But still.
What’s on your turntable right now?
The Starjets God Bless The Starjets. Big big and undeniably classic songs beside some of the chincyest wannabe top 40 attempts. Worth a spin.
