TVD Recommends: The ILG SXSW Showcase, Thursday, 3/15

We’re delighted to announce that TVD has partnered with Warner’s Independent Label Group (ILG) to co-sponsor (along with Modern Art Records, Bright Antenna, and Black Bell Records) what we’re calling one damn fine SXSW showcase, for next Thursday night at Austin’s Soho Lounge.

On the bill for 3/15 are Miniture Tigers, The Chain Gang of 1974, Geographer, Magic Wands, Secret Music, and Stepdad—all of whom we’ve cornered as a lead up to the showcase for a chat about—right, records.

First on the bill next week and first up at TVD in our six-installment preview, Stepdad who will be releasing their debut album on Black Bell Records later this summer.

“I’ve literally grown up with vinyl records all my life. Some my earliest memories are dancing with my mother to David Bowie’s “Lets Dance” and playing air piano to “Martha, My Dear.” My father worked as a record wholesaler from about 1975 to 1990 and that meant I inherited the discography of every major band of the past 30 years—everyone from The Beatles to Brian Eno to The Talking Heads.

It’s become somewhat of a cliche to say that you “love the warmth of vinyl” but from an early age I can remember noticing it. There was a depth I just couldn’t explain and was non-existent on my cassette copy of Dookie at the time.

Over the years my collection has grown, but the 50 some odd records my parents gave me in my early teens defined what my taste in music is today.”

“I collect disco 12″s and spin them under the name Sean Broadway. I’ve discovered and picked up some of my favorites at Academy in Williamsburg.

I also collect any old percussion records I can get. In the ’60s, Command Records put out a bunch of percussion heavy records with titles like Persuasive Percussion and Provocative Percussion, each with multiple volumes. I see them at garage sales and in the cheap dollar bins at stores all the time. Not only do they have some of the coolest sounds I’ve heard, but the LP covers are awesome, simple abstract designs. I have to get every one I come across.”

Ryan and ultramark don’t have record players, but seeing their EP “Ordinaire” pressed on yellow vinyl brought them to tears.
