Kaitlin Riegel’s newest single “System” deals in a sharp brand of Anglo, urban pop popularized by Jem in the early 2000s.
“System” has an undeniably slick vibe, imbued with the kind of street smart production that can easily walk the line between schoolyard smarts and sultry, diva funk. The testy subject matter of the song is masked by a fiery break beat and deft arrangement, both supporting the vocal talents of Riegel, who’s easily at home with her brand of neo soul.
Producer James Yuill (Hot Chip, Kate Nash, Florence & The Machine) fuses Kaitlin’s background in classical music and jazz with contemporary R&B phrasing and catchy vocal hooks, delivering a single that has a world-wide accessibility. Together, in London, they recorded “System,” with the B side “When I Fall Asleep” ahead of her second EP to be released at the end of 2014.
