If you arrive preschooled in the ways of My Education, you’re well aware that the “Premiere” title up there is a bit of a misnomer. The Texan post-rockers released 5 Popes, their debut LP, well over a decade ago but were nagged by a persistent question, namely “Can we get it on vinyl?”
With some remastering, new mixes, and a bonus track, that answer is finally yes—and we’re pleased to debut the full RE-release today with some insight from the band as to 5 Popes rebirth. Head here to pick one up but hurry, just 48 of 500 remain.
“I love the new mixes of “Lesson 3” and “Crime Story.” The weirdass language learning tape is brilliant and the virtual death threat answering machine tape from the band’s former singer (!!) sounds great. I agree with Chris, Sean’s mastering really takes little touches like these and brings them out with a high polish. The art by Eric Gibbons really shines in the 12″ package, too.”

“I was very impressed with the job Sean did remastering the tracks. The music sounds better than ever now. I played my part in ‘Thanksgiving’ (added bonus track) on a lap steel instead of slide guitar like I usually do. I’m really happy with the release over all.”
—Christopher Hackstie
“I’m very pleased to see this album reissued. At the time, we were moving very fast; writing and touring. I’m glad that it is getting another look. 5 Popes is a very special collection and an album that solidified My Education as a band and as composers.”
—Eric Gibbons
“I never thought I’d get to hear this record the way it was meant to be heard all along. Pure analogue tape mixed and mastered to a slab of vinyl perfection. Big thanks to Sean Seagler for putting in the finishing touches and making it sound just right.”
—James Alexander
“5 Popes is a very special record to me. It’s a document of one of the happiest and most creatively productive times of my life. I’ve always been very proud of it and of the incredible friends that made it with me. It really captured who we were as people and what we meant to each other. Being that it’s my favorite My Education album, I’m really happy to see it get the vinyl treatment.”
