Turin Brakes’ Olly Knights pulls 2 LPs off his shelves that are near and dear to him. —Ed.
Hejira by Joni Mitchell | “I discovered this album when I was about fifteen in my parents’ vinyl collection. It started out as completely alien to me, just this beautiful women smoking a cigarette in front of a highway on the cover.
The music seemed strange at first but the more I heard these travel songs, the more they opened up and I can honestly say they’ve become some of my favourite companions. I’ve had them with me most of my life and like a great book they constantly reveal new layers to me.
I truly believe Joni Mitchell is one of the absolute greatest songwriters who ever lived!
A Creature I Don’t Know by Laura Marling | I love Laura Marling, she’s the genuine article. She’s highly refined like a great wine and she’s getting better (which is a bit scary.) This album was the second of hers I’ve owned and I got it on lovely, heavy weight vinyl and play it all the time. It has a lovely sound produced by Ethan Johns with a slight alt country slant that fills up my house when it spins.
I just got hold of her latest Once I Was An Eagle and it’s beautiful but I always go back to her third LP. There’s just something about her fat-free nature that I love—nothing is too much, her lyrics are super balanced, and so are her melodies and guitar style. She just seems amazingly aware of her artistic self and it kinda blows my mind that she’s still only twenty-four.
I guess she has lived a whole bunch of lives before this one?”
