“My first car was an ’87 Mitsubishi pick-up truck—bright red. It was manual and had a tape deck, and I named it “Julie” after a Carly Simon song.”
“I had recently discovered my dad’s old vinyl collection, so obviously one of my first tasks was transferring all my favorite records to tape so I could listen to them in the truck. This was also right around the time I started singing with James and James, my bandmates then and now.
Looking back, it was a pretty magical synthesis point but at the time. I was just happy that the warm sound of the needle transferred to the cassettes I made of Blue, Abbey Road, Tea for the Tillerman, Tapestry, and dozens of other records. I wore them all out.
My bandmates and I all have vinyl collections in our New York apartments – which is saying a lot because in a city where you’re lucky to have even one closet, it’s certainly not space-efficient. But when you love listening to music that way, there is simply no substitute.
We’ve pressed vinyl for every album we’ve made because, even though it’s expensive, it’s just not something we’re willing to compromise on.
As collectors ourselves, we know what it means to the people who love it. That physical connection, that big wonderful piece of artwork, the way it sounds, the way it feels – it’s a very intimate way to experience music and that’s what we strive to create for our listeners with every song we write.”
