SXSW 2012 Announces Vinyl Record Panel for March 17

“The surge in vinyl production over the past 10 years comes at an interesting time when juxtaposed against the exponential growth of online culture. With this in mind, I’m interested in trying to reconcile the importance of a full length album in this predominantly downloadable digital single market.”
—Lewis Pesacov

SXSW 2012 will host the panel The Value of Vinyl: Production, Pressing and Promotion on Saturday, March 17th, moderated by Lewis Pesacov of Fool’s Gold and White Iris Records.

“Panelists will address the current market and consumer demand for high quality audio and collector-caliber releases; how to appropriately market vinyl as an independent artist and vinyl’s impressive growth in an otherwise digitally dominated industry.”

Heavy-hitters from all facets of the industry are featured on the panel, and here are a few of the things they look forward to addressing regarding vinyl’s place as a viable, thriving medium in today’s music marketplace:

Lewis Pesacov, Panel Moderator, Fool’s Gold, White Iris Records

“I’m really excited to be involved with this panel for my life-long love affair with listening to music on vinyl! In an increasingly virtual world, I believe the analogue and physical is becoming more and more important.”

“There are very many facets as to vinyl’s life in the current music industry, and honestly, I’m just happy it still exists! Through this panel I’m hoping we can discover some of the most important [facets] and how to keep these alive.”

Jennifer Freund, President, DoradoPkg

“I feel like vinyl has gathered so much more of a tailwind in the past few years. More people are interested in vinyl, more people are accepting that vinyl is, as opposed to vinyl was. I think maybe that’s what I’m most excited to elaborate upon at the panel: vinyl is a part of the present, not a remnant of the past.”

“Vinyl has entered the mainstream marketing speak. Urban Outfitters, for example, not only has a vinyl section—generally a prominent one—but they also chose to create a three-month window display made entirely from vinyl record sleeves. Scion the car manufacturer has more than half a dozen vinyl releases that they use exclusively as a marketing device. Other clients of ours are using the vinyl size and shape to make company brochures—all acknowledging that vinyl has a salience with the general population.”

Pete Lyman, Co-Owner & Founder, Infrasonic Sound Recording Co.

“Vinyl never left! A whole new generation is discovering vinyl and how great it can sound. This is not a revival but a new chapter for the medium.”

“I’m looking forward to discussing the sonic limitations of vinyl and client expectations compared to what a digital release sounds like during this panel. As for the rest of SXSW, I’m looking forward to breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day at Ironworks!”

The Value of Vinyl: Production, Pressing and Promotion will take place on Saturday, March 17th, from 3:30 – 4:30pm at the Austin Convention Center, Room 17B.
