“The first vinyl record I ever listened to was from my Father’s collection. It was The Beach Boys’ Christmas album. This was not at the top of my list for favorite album art however, there was still a magic in the vinyl.”
“Something about it made me feel like I was there, like they were singing Christmas songs on my front door step, like it was real. As I sifted through the box of records from my garage, I soon found ZZ Top’s Eliminator. This was more my style. There was this certain lyrical quality to Gibbons’ guitar playing that I didn’t hear when my dad played it in his car on a CD.
There was, and is, something about seeing that needle do the work. There’s something about the sound that is so raw but so clear, it’s more honest to me than any other method of listening.
I didn’t listen to too much more vinyl ’til I got a little older and entered my drug experimenting phase. The sound of the vinyl took me to a different place than it did any other way. I’ve never felt someone’s words and honesty as much as listening to Ray Charles’ “Georgia” on my record player. Vinyl takes you to that place, old or new, dark or light, hearing that needle tell a story. Seeing the needle do the work and the vinyl spinning around reminds you of all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making that song. I just love being able to see it unfold before your eyes.
Living in Austin at the time, the logical place to go when searching for a record is Waterloo. Being able to browse through records with your hands and feel them and see them is something that is sadly fleeting because of the digitizing of music, but my wish is for everyone to experience that.
My favorite album art and vinyl art is Explosions in the Sky All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. I think it was the first time I had seen actually engravings on the record itself. Really interesting.
I hope that vinyl doesn’t completely disappear. I see it making a sort of resurgence with Jack White and some other artists as well, and I think that’s great. It is a vehicle for listening to music that any music lover should experience, and none should be deprived of.”
