Young Widows crank out ecstatic driving rock that climaxes with crashing guitars and deep stereo delay. “The Money” is a sardonic riff on throwing caution to the wind, along with good advice and money.
The Louisville natives strike a wonderful balance between heavy post rock and preppy ’90s grunge. The track hypnotically bubbles up from the low end while lead singer Evan Patterson holds things down in his coy conversational tone. The Sonic Youth influence is ever-present, and though the band tips its hat to Nirvana and the like, they do maintain a sauntering, new millennium sound.
After three full-length albums and six split EPs, the boys have returned with a new LP, Easy Pain which steers their powerful sound in a familiar direction. They have employed some interesting promotional tactics, including capturing the full album live at Saint Vitus Bar in NYC before its publicity cycle and letting that video gestate on the internet before an official album stream was made public.
If you’re in the mood for something hard but clean, thrashing but tame, cryptic but to-the-point, this one’s for you.
