A few months back I needle dropped a track called “Indian Summer Bloom” which was one of many remixes leading up to the release of the original “Bloom”—a song which acted as the raw materials for the project. There is certainly a fine art to creating a concept album and The Morning Birds have pulled it off in an unpretentious air of collaboration. In fact, this may be one of first remix albums deserving of true critical analyses.
The idea is simple: every song reflects a season on the year, with the addition of Indian Summer to the constants. The DJs have taken elements from the original song and paired them with a sonic palette that is intended to reflect their chosen season. What the overall EP showcases is a bold mix of fluid, expansive, beat-driven lounge pop that is surprisingly diverse with its subtle genre blurring and ear turning tunefulness.
With all the credits and creative cooks in the kitchen, it is easy to lose focus of the seductive lo-fi quality innate within The Morning Birds original song. Boasting back alley horns and oozy melodies, about the only thing missing from the track is a spoken word piece which seems to have been spliced off and flown into the middle eight of the dubby “Spring Bloom” remix.
The group has released a few guarded details about their forthcoming long player, which they expect will further their exploration of psychedelic Folktronica and orchestrated retro Pop. I will be the first to predict their next full length, slated for Late 2014, will insure these Birds the status of indie luminaries.
