Eclectic outfit lotusbliss’ mini-LP “Deafening and Silent” is finally here, and it is an invigorating example of their ability to blend lyrical introspection with powerful, atmospheric music.
The opening track “Heaven to Me” brings the EP to life with an almost ethereal feel, with acoustic guitars and synths opening and joined by the ever captivating vocals. This is followed by the first single from the EP “Tear Me Apart” which contrasts the opening track with high octane and energetic choruses, coupled with tons of energy to create a sound that instantly packs a punch.
Of the single, the band say “The process of creating it really matches the lyrical journey; it’s a song about refusing to allow the darkest moments, the hurtful words or the hurdles you face to be what breaks you—”I won’t let this be what tears me apart.” These things can instead be the making of you. It has been a struggle and a wrestle to finish this song, but we’re so glad we didn’t let the difficulties throw us off.”
Next up is “Fiction” where the heartfelt lyrics really take the forefront creating a melancholic track, with the theme of us and our perceived flaws with lyrics like “Far from the image in your mind, the fiction you designed” solidifying this. This is followed by “Thin Lines,” the slowest song on the EP and is a synth filed heartbreak ballad: “Say what you wanna say to me, don’t bite your tongue there won’t be another time” providing a highly relatable soundscape.
The final three tracks on the release are “Blue Hour,” “Halo,” and “Vent Volent.” “Halo is the final single from the EP and brings up the tempo with upbeat guitars and drums which die down and then return for the sing-along chorus. Of the single the band say “Many of our songs are plagued with insecurities and doubts, despite a desire to hope for the better. We all want to be good for the ones we love—to support, to encourage, to celebrate, to pick up when things feel tough, but there’s a background worry in our head of ‘what if I can’t be enough?’ What if I’m not the saint and saviour you see me as, what if my halo is fragile and easily broken? These thoughts war with each other in the song.”
Hailing from Canterbury, UK, lotusbliss is the result of a literal lifetime of creating, experimenting, noise-making, and camaraderie between brothers Josh, Seth, and Adam. Going on to release three EPs, they’ve already grabbed the attention of BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and BBC Introducing’s Abbie McCarthy who has made them her “Record of The Week” twice now. lotusbliss have also received praise from the likes of Wonderland, Under The Radar, Atwood Magazine, and EUPHORIA to name a few.
