Needle Drop: Geoff Ong, “How To Be Alone”

New York City neo-soul singer/songwriter Geoff Ong channels break-up blues into retro R&B magic.

Ong, who originally hails from New Zealand, recently released the single “How To Be Alone” off his upcoming self-produced sophomore EP, “The Boston EP.” His buttery riffs and falsetto-filled vocals are loosely inspired by the retro stylings of Otis Redding, and Michael Jackson, but could easily appeal to fans of present day soul brothers such as Ed Sheeran and Michael Kiwanuka.

As for the pensive vibe of “How To Be Alone,” Geoff says it’s “a song I wrote about the difficult period of figuring out how to be by myself again after a break-up. It’s a weird time in anyone’s life, because you start second guessing how you feel about yourself, the past, and anyone new you meet with whom you think there might be a spark. You start to wonder ‘Do I really feel something for this new person? Or am I just using them to fill a gap?’”
