Needle Drop: Freedom Fry, “Blackmailed”

US/French duo Freedom Fry specialize in dreamy ’70s style, low-fi desert pop that is both gorgeous and brooding.

French songstress, Marie Seyrat, and Michigan-born musical chameleon, Bruce Driscoll (of Blondfire) make the music and filmed the video—a stunning, episodic narrative about blackmail. The atmosphere of the video is slightly retro with a faint European flavor. Fine nostalgic lenses and 8mm B-roll are used to accent chilling scenes of spying, deceit, and dirty dealings while the song pounds out its rhapsodic hook.

Freedom Fry’s new EP, “The Wilder Mile” came out this past August. The EP boasts a confident string of strikingly warm tracks that reflect the band’s move to Los Angeles. Seyrat and Driscoll have made a couple of EPs and a handful of singles, but have yet to produce a full album—something to look forward to after the release of their new singles bundle, Fan Club.
