Matthew Sweet’s latest release, the stellar Modern Art, hit store shelves this month and in tandem with its release and Matthew’s 20th Anniversary Tour where he’s playing his classic LP Girlfriend in full, he’s spending the week with TVD for a rummage through his records.
You’ll have an opportunity to win a vinyl copy of Modern Art later this week and you still have a few hours to enter to see Matthew live on the aforementioned Girlfriend tour which stops at the Birchmere tomorrow night, 10/26.
For now, we return the keys to The Vinyl District to Matthew.
The Beatles, Revolver | There was a copy of Revolver at our house growing up and it was always one of my favorites. The cover had cool Klaus Voorman artwork.
The music was approached with a wide range of treatments and some of my favorites from the Beatles are here. “She Said, She Said,” in particular, held sway over young Sweet.
Revolver marked the beginning of the Beatles’ psychedelic era when they started recording things that couldn’t really be played live. It was the first piece of studio art, where they used the recording studio as an instrument of sorts, resulting in expansive new directions for pop music.
The use of tape loops, backwards instruments, and sound effects all contributed to the sound of groundbreaking songs like ‘”Tomorrow Never Knows.”
