“We would save our lunch money all week and every Friday night we’d sneak out of our bedrooms and walk the mile up to Odyssey Records and buy a rock record. He would keep it Monday thru Wednesday, and I’d get it the rest of the week.
Odyssey was open 24/7, one of the perks of growing up in Vegas.
There were only two genres of music back then—rock and disco! If you lived through the rock vs. disco wars of the late seventies, you should have received a medal.
It was a magical time to be a teenager. Tom Petty’s first album was next to the Ramones which lived next to AC/DC. The Dead Boys snuggled up next to Rainbow. It was either rock or not rock.
I miss Mom and Pop record stores.
I miss them and being a kid with dreams of rock ‘n roll stardom. The ones that are left need our support. God bless the Heavy Metal Shop in Salt Lake City—one of the last great ones! It’s my new Odyssey Records. The owner Kevin Kirk is a man among men.
