Deer Tick:
The TVD First Date

“My very first vinyl memories are also my first associations with music in general.”

“There are two specifically vivid visions I have of myself, maybe three or four years old, that have forever shaped my outlook on music and my lifelong love affair with vinyl records. I was enamored by the smell, the artwork, and the fact that you could still hear the grooves play when the speakers turned off. There was something magical about this spinning wax disc.

My first memorable encounter with music occurred in the upstairs bedroom of my grandparents’ house. I watched the green apple on The Beatles “Come Together” turn around and around on a fuzzy pink, portable turntable that had been my mother’s when she was a child. Everything seemed to slow down in that room as my mind registered each drum hit and vocal harmony. Nothing had ever made sense in such a primal manner.

My second experience with vinyl occurred when I, being already sold on the vinyl format, started digging through my father’s record collection. For some reason I could not get over the cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced,” and constantly insisted upon hearing it over and over.

Sometimes my father would fall asleep as I listened, which is how I learned to operate a turntable. Always been a big fan of Side B.”
