This week at TVD, we’ll be tossing the spotlight on none other than the fine folks at Brooklyn independent label Captured Tracks. We’ve got the bands on their roster and the backstory on the label. (In that order!)
To kick off the week, Soft Metals, whose debut self-titled release hit shelves with its surreal electronic pop back in July. One half of this musical and romantic partnership, Ian Hicks reminisces about the heyday of house and its resurrection in Chicago and LA.
Earlier this year, I picked up the Virgo Four Resurrection box set on Rush Hour. It’s definitely one of my favorite vinyl purchases this year; the package design is great, and the five records give you an in-depth exploration into the raw house sound that Virgo was cultivating in the late ’80s.
When I lived in Chicago, I used to go to the SummerDance series to see people like Marshall Jefferson and Green Velvet spin records in Grant Park; it was a really inspiring experience to see the producers of some of these classic tracks play to the outdoor crowds.
We recently had a similar experience seeing Virgo Four play live here in LA a few weeks ago. They played to a ridiculously packed house; it feels really good to see them now getting the attention they deserve for their sublime contribution to dance music.
