“My first memory of vinyl, which I guess is similar for most people my age, was listening to my parents’ and grandparents’ records.”
“My dad has really a good collection which includes some classic records by The Rolling Stones and Bowie from when he was growing up. My grandparents have some great older stuff—I particular remember playing air drums to Cozy Powell’s “Dance with the Devil” as a kid!
Vinyl always seemed a whole different world to me, being someone who grew up with cassette tapes and CDs. It seemed so much more effort putting a record on! It’s only later that I’ve really understood why people love them so much. A lot of this is probably linked to making my own music.
It was big deal for Burning Condors when we recorded our first 7”. All of us went to see the tracks being mastered and there was a lot of excitement when the boxes full of vinyl finally arrived. The sound was so much closer to the energy and feeling we had in the room when we recorded those tracks live. That’s a big thing for us.
The other aspect of vinyl that I enjoy is the artwork. Growing up with CDs I would spend hours reading through the tiny booklets—which in retrospect has probably done my eyes no good at all!
The sheer scale of a vinyl record allows you to properly appreciate the artwork, which adds a lot to the whole experience. I’ve bought some records purely on the basis of the artwork and I’ve not been disappointed so far!
Next up for Burning Condors is the release of our first ever 7” single, “Love on the Rocks” b/w “Folsom Prison Blues” on 5th August 2013. To celebrate we’ll running a competition giving people the chance to win a limited edition vinyl sleeve, hand sprayed by me and based on an original design by Alex Forknell.
Keep an eye on the Burning Condors Facebook page for more details. Our debut album Round Our Way is due for release this September.”
