Abby Travis plays the Rock Shop in Brooklyn this Saturday night (4/7) and Sunday night (4/8) at the Mercury Lounge in NYC.
“My love of music was born from staring at the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s while listening to the album as a child. I kept trying to figure out if there were two Marilyn Monroes as I didn’t know who Diana Doors was. (Actually, I still don’t know who she is!) I would listen to that album constantly the way kids used to read the same little books over and over again.”
“I’m so glad that vinyl is back because not only do I love the sound of a real record; I love the large scale artwork! I also love listening to records as entire pieces of work; where the songs form a greater whole, and are not merely collections of random songs or singles. (I’m a big fan of concept albums as well.)
The itunes DJ has pretty much dismantled the art of sequencing a record for most of the music listeners out there. I mean can you imagine hearing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” without “With A Little Help From My Friends” right afterwards? Or any song on Diamond Dogs not in order? I mean that whole fucking album is one of my favorite things ever made by anyone.
I was also obsessed with the bright blue colored vinyl Supremes record my parents had. When I was about 12,I bought a picture disc of Prince’s “Little Red Corvette” (7″) which I’m sure greatly influenced my decision to release my new album IV as a picture disc!
My boyfriend is a gynormous (sp?) vinyl collector, so I don’t need to buy records that often. There is a small, little store I can walk to by my house called Turntable Lab that is pretty expensive but fun to browse around and they have good listening stations there.
Amoeba Records in Hollywood is my other main source for buying music…”
