When did the holidays begin, Seattle? Along with election season (is it over yet?), turkey trots (the only time of the year it’s acceptable for a run to happen in preparation of a 24-hour food binge) and “No-Shave” November (yay, let’s fight prostate cancer together!)—here are the shows that are starting off the spirited season right!
Friday, 11/2 –The Lonely Forest with Aqueduct + Yuni in Taxco at Neumos | Hailing from the lush woodland that is Anacortes, Washington comes the appropriately named, The Lonely Forest. The band is fronted by John Van Deusen, whose sleek voice can hit the higher pitch needed to keep up with the alt-rock band’s instrumentals. The band just released their third album, Arrows, on Warner Music’s Independent Label Group, Trans.
Arrows is filled with catchy, alt-pop lyrics and rhythm. While The Lonely Forests’ sound is hardly anything innovative, the band is able to carry and create a sound that appeals to both hipsters and the effortlessly receptive teenager looking for a new sound to love. No doubt they will put on a good show when they play in support of Jay Inslee, Democratic candidate for Washington State Governor at the free show at Nuemos this Friday. Gripping Seattle-based Aqueduct and up-and-comers Yuni in Taxco will perform at the event as well. Doors are at 8PM for the all-ages show.
Saturday, 11/3 – Cat Power at Showbox at the Market | “To put your heart on your sleeve” is an understatement for Chan Marshall, the force behind the influential and great, Cat Power. The lyrics to her songs are emotionally-charged and her vocals are grippingly deep with the ability to make the listener overcome by her sentiment. Cat Power has grown from her defining album, You Are Free, to her well-received and pace-changing new release, Sun, which she is on tour to promote this fall. On the album, she experiments with her sounds, exploring the use of synthesizers and engaging with rock legends such as Iggy Pop, who lends his dark voice to the album standout’ “Nothing But Time.”
Sun resonates with this decade as Marshall becomes an open book attempting to remind the young that this is the time, and that life is at their fingertips. The Goat will open for Cat Power at the all-ages show. Doors open at 8PM for the all-ages show at Neumos. Tickets are $29.50 advanced and $35 at the door.
Sunday, 11/4 –Twin Sister at Sunset Tavern | Chillwave is always enjoyable, especially when done well, which is exactly how Twin Sister serves it up on their latest release, In Heaven. The band has been compared to Portishead and the delivery of the band’s dreamy pop sound along with lead singer, Andrea Estrella’s whisper of a voice; they are consistently making waves in the indie music scene.
Twin Sister’s music delivers a state of audio bliss and euphoria that refuses to depart until the harmonious sounds cease. The band’s ability to blend hopeful lyrics and beats together makes for significance in music that can only grow from here. The band will be playing at the Ballard favorite, Sunset Tavern, this Sunday at 7:30. Pure Bathing Culture and Land of Pines will be opening. Advanced tickets are $10 for the 21+ show.
