Welcome to Friday, fellow music lovers! While Seattle’s’ City Arts Fest is presumably taking over the town this weekend with its many glorious artist and acts, I felt compelled to cover the ones that didn’t make the City Art Fest cut this weekend, but that are more than worthy of your love and attention. Enjoy!
Friday, 10/19 – Hot Bodies in Motion at the Crocodile | Performing an early show to promote Crocodile’s Happy Hour, soul and rock come together to form Hot Bodies in Motion. Laced with funk, the Seattle band, composed of Scott Johnson, Tim Lopresto, and Ben Carson, brings to the city a sound that isn’t easily replicated. In a city full of music, like Seattle, where new bands come and go, HBiM is one that has earned their stay and should become a staple on your IPod, especially for those rainy northwest days.
Lead singer, Carson’s voice is rich and at moments he hits a note just long enough to extend the smoothness of it. On the bands’ most recent album, Old Habits, their sound exemplifies rock around the edges, but is more a mixture of blues and funk with a few tracks that let them tack on the label of soul too. Either way, their songs definitely allude back to the bands’ name and the early show at Crocodile will help you gear up for the rest of your Friday night. Other local acts, Finn Riggins, Learning Team and And And And will be opening for HBiM at the all-ages show at the Crocodile on Friday. Doors for the FREE show (yeah that’s right and you know what free means….extra money for other weekend debaucheries) open at 4PM.
Saturday, 10/20 – First Aid Kit at Neptune Theater | Often compared to Fleet Foxes, First Aid Kit is the harmonic, folk-inspired musical project of sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg. Hailing from Sweden, the duo broke onto the music scene in 2007 with their debut album, The Big Black & the Blue, and is promoting their follow-up album, The Lion’s Roar at The Neptune Theater in the U-District. The sisters have a way of interlocking their beautiful voices together and combined with their underlying country feel, First Aid Kit form a sound that conjures images of the Midwest and a simpler time in America that unfortunately, was left behind long ago.
While the appeal of 2 beautifully-voiced sisters should have you elated all on its own, the fact that 100% of the proceeds from this concert are going to local non-profit, 826 Seattle makes the deal one you definitely can’t pass up. Starbucks has created the Little Big Show concert series to support Seattle art organizations and this show is the next in the series. To learn more about 826 Seattle and how the First Aid Kit show will be helping the organization, go to www.826seattle.org. Advanced tickets for the show are $15. Doors are at 8PM.
Sunday, 10/21 – Bombay Bicycle Club at Showbox at the Market | Bombay Bicycle Club is made up of four Brits who came together to produce their latest indie-rock album, A Different Kind of Fix, where memorable hooks and riffs get you on each separate track. The album is feel good music in its purest form…respectable, bouncy beats, and attractive lyrics about love and life.
There’s a reason that BBC sold out their show at The Crocodile earlier this year and is now headlining at the bigger venue, Showbox at The Market…..the wave is catching and everyone is trying to get a piece. Vacationer is opening at the all-ages show. Tickets are $18.50 advance and $20 at the door. Doors open at 7PM.
