Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, the self-ascribed “Twins of Evil” have reunited again for the aptly named “The Second Coming Tour,” hitting California’s Concord Pavilion for an evening of shock and roll.
Canadian industrial metal act, Deadly Apples kicked off as the crowd trickled in through the metal detectors out front and proceeded to blast through a fiery set that had the vocalist Alex Martel (better known as the kid that started the Montebello Rockfest at the age of 17) tossing mic stands around the stage only to have one of his crew fetch them, pick them up, un-bend and reset. Only to be tossed again.

For Marilyn Manson’s set, an enthusiastic crowd had packed the front, but the back of the general admission section seemed surprisingly sparse. Set opener “Irresponsible Hate Anthem” got the floor moving but not so crazy as to disrupt the dude juggling balls in the middle of the pit. For his part, Manson can be unpredictable. What the Concord crowd got was tight, lucid, and engaged with the audience. Simply put, Manson at his best, really only showing his naughty side as he shared what appeared to be a joint with his guitarist before launching into “The Dope Show.”
The hour-long set featured multiple costume changes and several trips off the stage to the front of the crowd … the conclusion of each song punctuated by the loud thud of his mic drop. “Sweet Dreams” perfectly ended the set and teed things up for Rob Zombie to bring it on home.
By the time Zombie hit the stage the amphitheater was packed, leading some to wonder where a lot of these people were during Manson’s set. When it comes to the Concord Pavilion, traffic is the obvious excuse but anyone paying attention would have quickly realized that the folks that passed on Manson’s set were likely guzzling beer in the bar. When the curtain dropped to reveal the band posed behind their mic stands as they launched into “Demon Speeding,” beer cups went flying and the pit started spinning sloppily in the way that only a few 20 ounce craft brews can fuel.
If you don’t already know, Rob Zombie can put on a heck of a show. LED panels consumed the stage as he danced along the risers that extended across the front of the stage, dreadlocks flying every which way. Piggy D (bass) and John 5 (guitar) both took a more reserved approach, making sure to give the boss man plenty of room to shake it.
Zombie’s hour and fifteen minute set covered the bases and even included a few covers by Metallica, Diamond Head, Alice Cooper, and The Beatles. But the biggest crowd response was reserved for the classic White Zombie tunes “More Human Than Human” and “Thunder Kiss ’65” … the songs that made Zombie obviously holding a special place with the fans.
Alas the Twins of Evil have wrapped their tour so if you missed it this time around, cross your fingers for a third coming.
