When it comes to collectable jazz labels from the 1970’s, the name Black Jazz is usually near, if not at the top of the list.
It’s a label record collectors spend years looking for original pressings from. Luckily, some newer labels are smart enough to cherry pick the better titles for reissue. Tompkins Square is one of those labels.
Usually known for their folk and country releases, Tompkins Square does expand beyond those realms given the chance—as long as the guitar playing is up to par. They do this week with the reissue of guitarist Calvin Keys’ Shawn-Neeq, originally released on the Black Jazz label in 1971.
On Monday night, tonight if you’re reading this as posted, Tompkins Square will be celebrating the release, along with Mr. Keys, who will also be celebrating his 70th birthday. A very special occasion indeed.
