Weekend Shots!

Things have been a little quiet these first couple of weeks here in Philadelphia, but this weekend looks to set things off!

Somehow we’ve made it half way through the first month in 2013 and already there have been some amazing new tunes from bands young and old released. In terms of live music however, little has transpired. All that changes this weekend—and there is a little something for everyone too.

Friday, January 18th | Wednesday night, up-and-coming British soulful singer/songwriter Jessie Ware made her national debut on American television as she performed her hit single “Wildest Moments” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. This comes in the middle of her first tour of the United States. It’s a short trek, only hitting six cities, and thankfully Philadelphia is one of them. She makes her way to Union Transfer tonight, along with opener Rochelle Jordan.

Over at the Merriam Theater, funnyman Louis C.K. comes to town. It marks the first of his two night stay in Philadelphia. Hopefully you did not sleep on either of these shows because both are sold out! If you did, good luck finding some reasonably priced tickets!

Saturday, January 19th | I hope that come Saturday, scientists have developed a safe way to clone humans due to the crazy number of great shows happening. To start things off, one of the biggest names from the 90s alternative scene, Soundgarden play at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby. Down in the Art Museum area, a couple of lead singers from punk/emo bands play a special solo acoustic show at the Northstar Bar. Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids and James Dewees of the Get Up Kids/Reggie and the Full Effect come to town with Into It. Over It.

Over at Union Transfer, locally based metal magazine Decibel magazine celebrates it’s 100th issue with one killer line up featuring Converge, Pig Destroyer, Municipal Waste, Repulsion, Tombs, and Evoken. Tickets for this special celebration are sold out, so get there early in hopes of finding a lucky soul selling an extra ticket! Yet with all this going on, one smaller show at the Barbary is the must see show of the weekend. Local emo-revivalists Everyone Everywhere host a record release for their second self-titled album released last August. Yes, you read that right. It’s the band’s first US show since the summer, so it’s only fitting they play it in their hometown. Teaming up with them will be a list of other noteworthy locals; Slingshot Dakota, Bandname and Glocca Morra.

Sunday, January 20th | Take a deep breath. Now, take another one. A long, lengthy nap will be necessary come Sunday because former hometown hero Diplo returnsfor one crazy night. Soundgarden Hall will be Diplo’s second stop in his attempt to play at four different clubs in one night. He will play Baltimore beforehand and once he is finished, Diplo will make his way over to Atlantic City and then finish things off in New York City. And you thought you’re weekend was going to be crazy…
