As a part of their weekly Tuesday Tune Out series which combines bands and film, PhilaMOCA is bringing two of the city’s younger, more promising acts together this week.
Located in a former showroom for mausoleums and tombstones, as well as Diplo’s former headquarters for his label Mad Decent, PhilaMOCA is gallery and show space located on 12th Street just north of Spring Garden Street. The group behind it are a “not just for profit” whose goal is to provide Philadelphia and the arts communities with new and interesting exhibits and performances. They also host a number of great, small concerts each month.
Every Tuesday the gallery hosts an event titled Tuesday Tune Out. The idea behind it is simple, two bands play and then a movie is shown. Each month they hand select a different prominent member in the music community to curate each week’s show. The chosen individual picks which bands play and the bands then select what movie is shown after they finish performing. While the acts are announced weeks before their date, the movie is not. Only attendees will know which movie the bands select.
For the month of May, PhilaMOCA has teamed up with Mark Schoneveld, aka YVYNYL to curate the weekly series. For his first week, Mark has asked local up-and-comers Hurry and Literature to play.
Hurry is the side project of Everyone Everywhere bassist Matt Scottoline. Whereas Everyone Everywhere are pushing the emo-revivalist movement, Scottoline’s other effort takes a more dreampop direction. Taking nods from bands like Slowdive, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine, Hurry released their debut self-titled album earlier this Feburary.
Literature, who recently relocated from Austin up to Philly, provide a perfect counterbalance to Hurry. Borrowing sounds from the C86 movement from Britain, jangly Manchester guitar, and power pop they too recently released new music this year. In January they released a new 7″ single, “Tie Dye (Your Life)” backed with “Apples,” their first new material since their debut full length, Arab Spring. Literature are no strangers to the Tuesday Tune Out series either, having played back in July of last year.
This Tuesday will be your chance to catch two great samples of what the city’s local music scene is all about. The Tune Out series is always very intimate—with a splash of surprise.
PhilaMOCA is located at 531 N. 12th Street, just a block above the intersection of 12th Street and Spring Garden Street. Tickets are only $5 and can only be purchased at the door. It’s all an all ages show, so bring the kids along too!
