As we noted in DC yesterday, our friend Olivia Mancini (with her Mates in tow) plays DC on Friday night and the following evening she’s back to her new home town of NYC for a show at the National Underground. We’ve got a pair tickets for both shows to giveaway, and today it’s all about TVD NYC. Olivia fills you in on how to win ‘em:
“I’m in a long-distance relationship. New York is my new home but Washington, D.C. has my heart. D.C. beckons about every other weekend, tempting me with family, friends, and bandmates. New York, well, for Pete’s sake, it’s New York. There’s so much to see and do, I want to make the most of my grad-school related time here. This weekend is the best of both worlds. Homecoming show with the D.C. Mates at the Black Cat on Friday. And then the National Underground in NYC on Saturday. Walk on the Wild Side – Lou Reed | My New York isn’t as wild as Lou Reed’s. To be fair, whose is, post-Andy Warhol’s Factory? But the city is still chock full of people making and remaking themselves. I haven’t run into as many drug dealers, male prostitutes, and backroom fellatio-givers as Reed describes but I live a few blocks from the Apollo (theater, on 125th St.). And, on one of my first days in the city, I sat in some blood on the subway. For some reason, this song came to mind. Well, this one, and Rod Stewart’s “The Killing of Georgie.” “Walk on the Wild Side” gets me every time with that double-bass part and girl-group “do-do-do’s.” Honorable mention: “Lua” – Bright Eyes; “Fairytale of New York” – The Pogues & Christy MacColl.
