If the clouds part and the stars align just so, you’ll be seeing quite a bit of Bee and Flower around these parts in the months and years to come. I’m working on it overtly (and covertly.)
For now, together, we’re celebrating Bee and Flower’s free show Thursday night (4/14) at Zebulon in Brooklyn—AND Record Store Day. Both of which we and Bee and Flower’s Dana Schechter are navigating together…
“As a musician, I can’t think of a more fitting salute to the immortal soul of music than Record Store Day. Musicians and record stores are like wounded cousins, weathering the wobbly, uncharted seas of the music industry together with steadfast belief: if you love music, you have no choice but to continue. Trends and formats come and go, but you have to stick to what you believe in.
And this is what holds us together, the testament to the longevity and value of music itself. Records are collected, revered, studied. Like many of life’s most valuable things, records demand respect or they won’t perform. But when they do, you get a tactile experience like no other. You can pinpoint the exact groove that holds a passage which gives you shivers. Watching it spin is like seeing infinity in action. The cover’s worn edges remind us of history and time passing. Every slab of vinyl is totally unique, and I find that really refreshing.

For me, I’d hope (and I think most musicians would agree) that the music I make will be experienced as a complete work. It’s not just a collection of songs, it’s a humble offering for listener and artist to share a journey. Sure, the conveniences of digital music are obvious – even helpful in many ways – but an essential connection is lost when music is removed from context without sequencing, artwork, and liner notes.
Musicians don’t say, “I made a new batch of mp3’s” we say, “I made a new record” (even when it’s just a CD.) At its best, an album tells a complete story, and a lonely binary file sitting on a hard drive just can’t compete. So with all this in mind, I’d like to send out a genuine Thank You to record stores worldwide for helping us keep our flags in the air. —Dana Schechter

We’ve got a rather rare 7″ from Bee and Flower on Belgium’s Morningrise Recordings to put in the hands of three of you. The A-side is “Dust & Sparks,” a track from the “What’s Mine Is Yours” sessions, omitted from that release. The single is a limited edition, Europe-only release on cream vinyl with artwork by painter/illustrator/tattoo artist Nicole Boitos.
