Beyond Beyond is Beyond Week: Disc 2, Side A

Well I told you all about the Beyond Beyond is Beyond psych comp already. And it’s available in all its magical musical glory as a free digital download over at Bang Bang Boogaloo.

And the comp release show at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn last night was mind-blowingly killer, with next-level sets from The Zabalas, Woodsman and Hopewell. If you haven’t seen any of these bands live…well, do it soon! And big cheers to everyone who came out.

As I put this comp together I found myself wondering how it would’ve played out if it had been pressed to vinyl. So let’s get back to our hypothetical triple-disc Beyond Beyond is Beyond compilation album.

We’ve covered disc one already, side A and side B. So today, let’s move on to the second vinyl disc…

Out of the ashes of Radio Moscow, comes Blues Pills. Cory Berry & Zach Anderson, the former rhythm section of Radio Moscow, have something new in store for the world to hear. Think of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac having a baby with Graveyard. Driving bass lines, heavy jazzy drums, and soulful singing are tied together by the haunting beauty of a Swedish goddess, Elin Larson. Bliss out…

Mondo Drag is massive reverberating vocal sounds crooned over lush hot fire fuzzed trance riffs and hazy atmospheric analog FX-ed space rock ‘n’ roll melted into feedback-drenched electro-oscillating freak-out jams spliced with organ-heavy garage-punk stomp parts, dark and dreamy synth-prog buildups with folky acoustic ragas and filthy blues slides.

Outrageous Cherry is a group from Detroit that looked to the Temptations’ “Psychedelic Shack” as a sort of personal manifesto, making more than 11 albums of unpredictable pop music with strange introspective lyrics, unhinged guitar solos, and no cymbals whatsoever. They strike a sometimes mesmerizing balance between well-crafted songs and crazed improvisations.

Citay began as the bedroom guitarmony project of Ezra Feinberg in the summer of 2004. That fall he moved to SF and began working with producer Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, The Melvins, Joanna Newsom) and the two recorded the self-titled debut at Tim’s Louder Studios. After its release on Important Records tours with Vetiver, The Fucking Champs, and Howlin Rain ensued, and Citay was picked up by Dead Oceans, the then-new label of the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian family. In the fall of 2007 Citay’s second album “Llittle Kingdom” was released to rave reviews. More touring, more recording, and by early 2010 the third Citay album, “Dream Get Together,” again recorded with Tim Green at Louder Studios was released, again on Dead Oceans. This album brought the band to festival dates around the US and Europe. By the end of 2010 Ezra had relocated to Brooklyn and put together a band of powerful New York shredders ready to send his soaring harmonies into deep space. More touring and recording followed, and the band are currently working on the fourth album, again with producer Tim Green.

Hopewell has been blending vintage fuzz pedal jams with their early space rock and shoegaze roots for over a decade. Their tumultuous canon is, on whole, the perfect, cinematic bridge between the epic psychedelia of ‘90s acts like Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev and the genre’s new generation, including Dungen and Serena-Maneesh. Atypically, Hopewell’s music becomes heavier and more abstract as the band gets older. The modern version has two drummers, often employs a choir and horns, and is infamous for bludgeoning audiences into stunned silence with its brilliantly strange and unpredictable psych-rock orchestration. Celebrating a self-made career that exploded into collaboration with super-producer Dave Fridmann, a 2001 BBC Peel Session, touring the UK’s festival circuit, opening for My Bloody Valentine & being hand picked by the Flaming Lips for All Tomorrow’s Parties.

All right, then! More album sides to come on Monday. Merry weekend!
