Weekend Shots!

Crazy amounts of rain and possibly some tropical force winds are forecast for the New Orleans area over the long Labor Day weekend as the disturbance in the gulf, which will be named “Lee” when it reaches tropical storm level, approaches. This weather could force the Black Men of Labor to postpone their annual parade scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

But most of the other musical events will go on as planned since this storm is expected to only cause minor flooding.

Tonight is the last Free Friday at Tipitina’s for the summer and they plan to blow it our in style with bounce artists, Partners-N-Crime And 5th Ward Weebie. These veteran performers will be backed by a live band called the Big Easy Bounce Band.

Also on the bill is one of the more interesting acts to emerge along with the bounce explosion. DJ Tony Skratchere performs what has been dubbed “Yacht Bounce.” This bizarre hybrid mashes up bounce beats with soft rock from the 1970s. I am sure that this writer never wants to hear Christopher Cross’s “Sailing” again. But I guess there are people out there who were too young to remember being tortured by the insipid tune.

Also Friday night, the drummer Kevin O’Day and uber-sousaphonist Kirk Joseph are teaming up once again with up-and-coming saxophonist Calvin Johnson in a band called ChapterSOUL. They are throwing down at Le Bon Temp Roule.

Saturday night, the Drive By Truckers begin a two-night stand at Tipitina’s. Check today’s paper and Offbeat’s web site for more information than you can use about this band.

Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes are at the Blue Nile. I just saw an episode of Jay Leno where OK GO was joined by Animal from the Muppet band on drums. It reminded me of when Andre Bohren, the drummer for the Sketchy boys, built an amazing costume of Animal for the MOMS Halloween Ball. He played all night without missing a beat in the huge headpiece.
