You know what time it is. From Americana and Country, to Jazz and Expressive Punk, carnival season has arrived, and these are the spots the locals are heading.
Self-proclaimed as “atmospheric dub reggae, expressive punk, abrasive hardcore, afro-beat rhythm, poetry, and mindful lyrics,” the great guys in All People are celebrating the release of a very important debut, Communicate Big Top. It’s pretty mind-blowing how well this group seeps in and out of a motley crew of styles, continuously I might add, as the music has no breaks.
I’m not saying I completely understand nor can describe what “expressive punk” is, but I can guarantee with Community Records co-releasing with Asian Man Records , if you’re not wasted after the Offbeat Awards, this is where you will be Friday night.
Also on Friday, the BlueBrass Project Release Party is hosted at the Maple Leaf. Featuring members of the original Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, 101 Runners and special guests The Sufi Brothers, starting at 10pm and going til who knows when.
Following all of Friday’s chaos, continue the post-Krewe du Vieux party at One Eyed Jacks to celebrate the release of Vox and the Hounds‘ vinyl-only EP Cowards. I’m still on the high from their November 30th Release Party for full-length Courage, but with this show you’re also getting Nola’s favorite Americanians Coyotes, on top of Roadkill Ghost Choir, who dropped a great little EP called Quiet Light a few months ago. Seriously. Go listen to it.
You should see Sick/Sea on Sunday night at Circle Bar (how’s that for alliteration?) This McAllen, TX trio is lead by the strikingly classic vocals of Audrey Scott, who belts out notes against a backdrop of jazzy, country-esque pop confection. Surprising find for me this week, as Sea/Sick just started out on a 37-date tour in support of their new release Moral Compass, with only seven days off in between! Impressed.
