It’s the weekend before Thanksgiving and that means one thing—Po Boy Fest! There’s also a lot of live music happening to get you in the mood for food. Here’s a look at my picks.
Yesterday I wrote about Basin Street Records celebrating 15 years of fine recorded music and suggested that you head over the Tipitina’s for a live performance by Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers tonight. Since then some addition information has emerged.
Kermit has suggested that he may revisit some of the songs from that era of his career, so this might be a chance for dedicated Kermitologists to hear some rarities. Also, the songstress Ingrid Lucia opens the show.
Downtown, Herlin Riley holds down the drum chair at Snug Harbor. His sets are inventive and usually downright brilliant.
Saturday afternoon, the latest installment of the Record Raid takes place on Tulane’s Zimple Quad at the corner of Broadway and Zimple Streets. These events have gotten bigger and better since they first began. Get there early for the best vinyl, CDs, and even cassettes and DVDs.
Saturday night there’s no need to get your beauty rest. The Saints don’t play until 3:15 PM on Sunday afternoon. For the craziest crowd go to the Maple Leaf. It will be packed on the streets and in the club since the Po Boy Fest will be going on.
Mario Abney, the young trumpeter who has been tearing it up around town, sat in with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band last weekend at the Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival. He smoked. He’s playing at Three Muses at 9 PM.
Later in the evening, an interesting gig is going down at the Maple Leaf Bar. Joel Harrison is an acclaimed New York guitarist. He has put together a killer New Orleans band and they intend to peel the new paint of the walls of the uptown club. Expect to see Matt Lemmler on keys, Rex Gregory on sax, Chris Severin on bass, and newest sensation at UNO, Jamison Ross on drums. He just won the Thelonious Monk Competition.
The Po Boy Fest is all day Sunday on Oak Street. The main stage features Los Po Boy Citos, Flow Tribe, Honey Island Swamp Band, and Corey Henry’s Tremé Funktet. Click the link for times and stages.
