Two hot touring acts, a festival that celebrates a vegetable, and more live music than ever. Here’s a look at where you’ll be this fine weekend in New Orleans.
Friday night, the Truth and Salvage Co. returns to headline at Tipitina’s. If you read lead guitarist and vocalist Scott Kinnebrew’s post at TVD on Wednesday, you know that the band just got back from a sea cruise with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they are embarking on a tour to support military veterans.
I have been digging into their material since their last visit to New Orleans, and I really like what I hear. This band features four vocalists. They write some really compelling songs. They rock. I highly recommend checking them out.
Saturday is the Mirliton Festival in the Bywater. For the first time in the fest’s history, they are moving to a new location. The Brickyard is closer to the French Quarter and the Marigny. Click the link for the new location. Kermit Ruffins headlines. Here’s the full schedule.
The new spot should be a suitable replacement for Mickey Markey Playground, which was getting a bit crowded as the Bywater continues to develop into hipster heaven. The Bywater neighborhood was featured in a recent issue of Food & Wine, so you know that all the cool kids are already looking to move further down river. Who knows—Chalmette may become hip.
Saturday night, an interesting duo is performing at the Blue Nile. Billy Martin is well known as the drummer of Medeski, Martin and Wood. However, his partner, keyboardist Wil Blades, was flying beneath my radar until I saw him at a recent show with guitarist Will Bernard at the Maple Leaf Bar.
This cat can really play. He holds down all the bass parts with the skill of the greatest organ players. It’s going to be very interesting hearing him with just a drummer. I can gaurantee that they will be making a serous racket. Khris Royal opens with his trio.
