Get your weekend started in style with an in-store performance by the North Mississippi Allstars at 4 PM this afternoon at the Louisiana Music Factory. The next two days promise more music than any one person can comfortably consume. Here’s a look at my picks.
The Gretna Heritage Festival has something for every taste. Personally I am looking forward to Galactic tonight at 7 PM and Tommy Malone and the Mystic Drone featuring Dave Malone tomorrow at 6 PM. Hot of the heels of his guest turn with Bonerama, Dave is raring to go. He is also scheduled to appear in Houma at the Voice of the Wetlands Festival with fellow Radiators guitarist Camile Baudoin and many others.
Jazz drummers take over Saturday night. Herlin Riley, who spent many years with Wynton Marsalis, plays at Snug Harbor. Sets are at 8 and 10 PM. The ever-smiling and ebullient Shannon Powell is at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse at 8 PM.
For late night musical action on Saturday, the Brass-a-Holics take over at the Playhouse at midnight and uber-bassist James Singleton celebrates his birthday at the Hi Ho Lounge. He has percussionist and vibraphonist Mike Dillon on hand to kick things up a notch.
Head back to Gretna for the last day of the festival on Sunday when Good Enough for Good Times and George Porter Jr. and the Runnin’ Partners will provide more funk than you can use beginning at 6 PM.
