There is a thriving free jazz scene going on in New Orleans and the stalwart organizers manage to bring internationally known artists to town on a regular basis. The Dutch musician is one of the strongest and most engaging trombonists in the worlds of jazz and creative music.
Tonight he will be appearing with at least three of our city’s most incredible improvisers on trombone—Rick Trolsen, Jeff Albert and Mark McGrain. Other local trombonists also expected to appear.
Dubbed “Bare Bones,” the concert, in the words of Scatter jazz mastermind Andy Durta, will feature, “solos, duos, trios, and general brass buffoonery.” All I can add is that this is going to be some crazy music. All three of Wierbos’ guests are masters and I expect that they will take the music into outer space and back again. The show begins at 10 PM.
Tomorrow night, the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center presents “The Fretless Continuum” at 8:30 pm. Wolter Wierbos will join Helen Gillet on cello and Dave Easley on pedal-steel for some more exciting improvised music.
